My call to the cable company to cut the cord lasted 31
minutes. After going through the voice
prompts I reached a customer service representative who quickly passed me on to
another agent – who I’m sure was in the customer retention department. This second agent asked me a few questions
(why am I dropping TV, what channels do I watch, do I have any premium channels). After she typed noisily on her computer for a
bit, she came back with an offer – she could basically give me my current
service for $92 rather than the $137 I’m paying – a savings of $45/mo.. The catch is that it would be for 12 months.
I told the agent that I could still save more than that, at
least another $10-$15 per month. She
didn’t offer up anything else to sweeten the deal.
So I took the plunge and told her to go ahead and cut the
cord. She spent about 10 minutes typing
on her computer. Finally, she told me
that it would happen at the end of my current billing cycle (you generally pay
ahead for cable service in my area.)
She also told me that she was able to get
me promotional pricing for 12 months for the internet service I am keeping – I’ll
pay $39.99/mo. for 12 months including all taxes/fees for the exact same
service I currently have – a savings of $15.01/mo. over what I had estimated
when first looking at my cable bill!!
After the 12-month promo, she told me, the internet cost would rise to
$49.99/mo. which is still $5.01 less than I had estimated.
I lose my cable TV in two days – I’ll let you know how it
goes….
Current savings with all of my programs (antenna/Hulu
Plus/iTunes), taking into account the additional internet savings: $71.01/mo. + one-time cost of digital antenna.
